"Retrato" Limited Edition

“Portrait” is a project during the period between my mother’s cancer diagnosis and some time afterwards, where my family relationships (me as a part) and my relationship with myself (me as everything) were altered and obscured.

After the medical opinion in July 2015 that threw us by surprise; the anguish of not knowing what would happen next; the looming abyss without a foothold; I was immersed in a state of mind in which, on the one hand, I tried to build a fortress in which to resist the situation, but, on the other, the construction was continually collapsing.

These photographs attempt to represent those struggles and that contradiction: a state of alertness, uncertainty, containment and emotional depression. In fear of the inevitable, I have glimpsed the possibility of real death through metaphors, through symbols. Abandoned to pain, I conversed with silence as fear took over each of my moods, so contradictory, so opposite. Each photograph is meant to be a reflection of these states with a cathartic intention, insofar as they are an exercise in introspection and observation – as an attempt to represent the indescribable – in order to reach a certain acceptance and liberation. For this reason, this self-portrait condenses, at the same time, a cry of rage and dismay, a cry for help and an attempt at self-improvement.
